What is Calcium?
Calcium is a mineral necessary for building strong bones and teeth and is responsible for keeping them healthy! Additionally, calcium also makes sure our blood clots properly!
You find calcium in dairy products such as cheese, yoghurt, milk, almonds and some dark, leafy green vegetables.
What is Vitamin-D?
Vitamin-D is essentially Calciums best friend! Vitamin D is essential for the absorption of calcium in the body and can help prevent rickets in children!
You find Vitamin D in fish like tuna or salmon, egg yolks and most importantly, from safe exposure to the sun!!
What makes them a Power Couple?
Calcium and Vitamin D synergise to protect bones and the body. Where calcium helps build and maintain a strong skeleton, Vitamin D is the nutrient that helps the body effectively absorb calcium. So, even if you were receiving enough calcium in your diet, you would still need Vitamin D to ensure that the calcium is being absorbed and being put to good use.
Vitamin D will help protect from diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Although Vitamin D can be found in supplement form, many foods are fortified with the Vitamin including wholegrain cereals, salmon and eggs.
The older we all get, the less efficient we are at harnessing Vitamin D from sunlight, which means that the dietary presence of Vitamin D is all the more important for its benefits and that consistent absorption of calcium. As such, adults aged over 65+ should look to take a Vitamin D supplement to ensure that calcium and Vitamin D can work together for skeletal benefits.
On a personal level, I do take a Vitamin D and a Calcium supplement! There are a couple of reasons for this…
- I work indoors! I find that particularly during the winter time, I barely see the sun as its dark when I go to work and dark when I leave. I still want to ensure that I am getting my Vitamin D so I stock up on the supplements and make an extra effort to get it into my diet!
- I am dairy free! I live off of Almond Milk and will always choose to go for dairy-alternatives fortified with calcium. In the Almond Milk I purchase (Alpro) there is 120mg of calcium per 100ml, so I take my supplement to give it a boost!
