The Secret Spa.

Spa, yay!

In October of last year we moved from the North Tyneside coastal town of Tynemouth out to the Northumberland countryside, just outside of Alnwick, due to work commitments.

Having seen out one of the coldest, snowiest winters that we could remember, I am finally getting used to living in the countryside. This is our temporary home and we are planning to move back to the coast before the end of the year, so we are trying to explore as much of the things around us whilst we live here!

When we were looking for places to live, we kept stumbling across somewhere called the ‘Secret Spa’ in the search results.

During a walk one winters day, we found it! Nestled just beside St James Church in Shilbottle is a group of unassuming stone cottage buildings that make up a sports centre, spa and residence of the spa grounds.

It was to my wonderful surprise that, after having a particularly busy time at work, my husband had booked me with a hot stone back, neck and shoulder massage as an Easter gift.

I immediately began googling and reading reviews of the spa which were absolutely glowing!!

I was also thrilled to discover that The Secret Spa use ESPA, which is used by similar locations in the North East such as the Malmasion in Newcastle and The Village Hotel in North Tyneside.

The Spa & My Treatment

The spa is furtherest most building from the front entrance/drive way of the group. I walked in and was kindly greeted by a member of the team who got me to the fill out some paper work before the treatment.

(It is necessary before most treatments to fill in a couple of bits about any areas of concern, health issues and where you want to focus the pressure!)

I did not have a particularly busy day coming up so I wanted to feel detoxified, relaxed and remove some of the tenseness I pack into my neck and shoulders.

As the treatment began I was asked to do a sample of two ESPA body oils to decide the overarching fragrance of my treatment. I chose the Restorative Oil which is…

‘A rebalancing body oil to comfort and calm the senses. Sweet Orange, Rose Geranium and Lavender help ease anxiety and calm, while Palmarosa helps tone and Sweet Almond Oil deeply nourishes for beautifully soft, supple skin.’

Once I was undressed and on the table a bowl of hot water and the restorative oil where placed close to my face, where I was asked to take a couple of deep, cleansing breaths before the treatment began.

The rest of the treatment is a cloud of deep tissue, hot stone fog. I can firmly say that the massage I received at the Secret Spa was the best I have ever had!

What I love most about the Secret Spa is that is has a very ‘small local’ business feel. Compared to your much larger Wynyard Hall or Rockcliffe’s of the North East, the Secret Spa offers the highest level service in a small Northumberland village.

I must just say a quick shout out to the team at the Secret Spa. They were just awarded the Spa of the Year NorthEast and best overall Spa UK by the English Hair and Beauty Awards.

Might I add, thoroughly deserved!!!
